Acquaintance with Reading IELTS and its essential points

Hello, today we want to talk about the reading part of the IELTS test. What is reading, how many sections does it have, and how are its scores calculated? Reading, which is the second part of the IELTS test, is one of the most challenging parts and obtaining a high score requires sufficient skills and the use of different techniques. The volunteer is given about 60 minutes to answer the 40 questions in this section. That means you have about 90 seconds to answer each question.

In this article, we will talk about the following topics:

  • Reading differences in general and academic modules
  • Questions and sections of reading
  • How to score the reading section

Reading differences in General and Academic modules

Like the writing section, reading questions are designed separately for the two academic and general modules. The generalities of this section are the same for both. For example, there are about 40 questions in both modules and the answer time is the same. Also, the structure of the questions and how to answer them are the same. The only difference between academic and general reading is the format, question Issue, and scoring.

In other words, non-specialized but real topics such as books and newspapers are asked questions in text or tables and graphs in the Academic exam.

But in the General module, the actual content is selected from the newspapers, magazines, and advertisements that you deal with daily and public.

Another difference between the two tests is the way they are scored. To be accepted and get a high score, you must have more correct answers in the General module than in the Academic.

Questions and sections of reading

The IELTS test reading consists of three parts, and you must answer the number of questions designed. These are multiple-choice, descriptive, table questions, and blank questions that you need to answer correctly by understanding the main topic of the text. But these three sections are also designed in two different General and Academic modules.

In the academic test, there are three sections. In each section, there is a text with non-specialized topics called passage. You should answer the questions in that section by reading each passage and timing correctly.

But the General module is a little different. General Reading, like Academic, has three sections, but the first and second sections each consist of two passages, and only the third section has one passage.

Don’t forget that the further the sections go, the more complex the text and questions become. That is, the third part is the hardest part.

How to score the reading section

The scoring section of the IELTS test is different from other sections. As we said before, this section has 40 questions, each of which is a point. In other words, your score is calculated from 40. At the end of the test, the score is calculated and converted to an overall IELTS reading score of 1 to 9. For example, if you answer all 40 questions correctly, your score will be 9. If you answer 37 questions, you will receive a score of 8.5, and the lower the number of correct answers, the lower your reading score.

Conclusion

In this section, as in other sections, your proficiency in comprehension, detail comprehension, and the ability to analyze events are measured. So you need to strengthen your ability to read, analyze, and vocabulary to get the desired score and pursue your goals.
